As a child Eleanor was considered shy and plain; she lost both parents early and grew up with a strict grandmother. Public speaking terrified her for years – her voice trembled.
She gave speech after speech anyway, became the most influential First Lady in US history, and chaired the commission that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

Maya Angelou1928–2014
After a childhood trauma, Angelou did not speak for nearly five years. Even as a celebrated author the doubt remained: after eleven books she still believed she would be exposed as a fraud.
She kept writing anyway – and spoke openly about that feeling. In doing so she gave countless people permission to feel like an impostor and do it regardless.

Vincent van Gogh1853–1890
Van Gogh sold virtually no paintings in his lifetime and depended financially on his brother Theo. His letters show a man in constant doubt about his own talent.

Rosa Parks1913–2005
On 1 December 1955 in Montgomery, Parks refused to give up her bus seat. She was arrested, soon lost her job as a seamstress, and her family received threats for years.
Her refusal triggered the 381-day bus boycott that led to the desegregation of public transport. A single moment of standing firm changed a country’s law.

Sophie Scholl1921–1943
As a student in Munich, Scholl distributed leaflets against the Nazi regime with the White Rose – knowing that discovery meant death. She was 21 years old.
Her courage cost her life, but her leaflets were smuggled out of Germany and dropped over the country in their millions. Her words outlived the regime that tried to silence her.

Michelangelo Buonarroti1475–1564
Michelangelo saw himself as a sculptor, not a painter. He took on the Sistine Chapel commission reluctantly and worked for four years in a painful posture, in a technique he had not mastered.
The result is considered one of the greatest works in art history. He wrote “Ancora imparo” at 87 – for him, uncertainty was not a flaw but a driving force.
